Barrier lipid
Ceramide NP
Also: Ceramide 3
One of the lipids your skin manufactures naturally to hold itself together. Topical replenishment after over-exfoliation or weather damage.
What it is
A specific class of lipid molecule. Human skin contains a precise blend of ceramides — NP, AP, EOP among them — in roughly 3:1:1 ratio. That ratio is what dermatology research has identified as most barrier-restorative when applied topically.
How it works
Slots into the gaps between corneocytes (skin cells) in the stratum corneum, restoring the brick-and-mortar structure that prevents transepidermal water loss. Compromised barrier means moisture leaving from inside, irritants entering from outside, and visible reactivity.
Who it is for
Anyone with skin currently feeling tight, flaky, reactive, or unusually sensitive. Pakistani winters, AC environments, and post-acid use are all classic ceramide-deficiency situations.
What to watch for
Look for products that name the ceramides specifically (NP, AP, EOP) rather than the vague phrase 'ceramides'. The latter could mean any concentration of any subset.
